Port Talbot Cadets Arriva Project at Port Talbot Parkway Station

10 April 2009
YOUNGSTERS’ ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT GETS STATION SHIP SHAPE

The two phase project, led by Arriva Trains Wales, began in October 2008 and involved Sea Cadets from Port Talbot - Training Ship Resource.
Two murals illustrating scenes from around the Port Talbot area were designed and painted by the Sea Cadets with the support of Neath based artist Paul Rees. The station flower planters were also given a makeover by the Cadets and support Staff.

Speaking on behalf of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, Councillor Derek Vaughan, said: “The scheme to improve the environment for rail travellers by Arriva trains, the Sea Cadets are a prime example of partnership working within the community in Neath Port Talbot.

Commander Jos Binns Deputy Area Officer for South West Area Sea Cadets, said: “Our aim is to encourage good citizenship while providing fun, friendship and adventure. Cadets have the opportunity to learn new life skills based on waterborne and land based activities. They have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the project, which will be a valuable way of promoting the activities of the Sea Cadets among the wider community.”

Geraint Morgan, Community Affairs Manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “The object of this exercise was to give practical work experience to young people and enhance the station, which is an important gateway to the town. We are delighted with the standard of work, which has helped create a brighter and more welcoming environment for passengers.”
